Welcome to my review for Thronum Vrondor, the 4th to last review covering Immortal Frost Productions 2024/2025 releases list, today i’ll be covering Drowning In The Distorted Light.
The first thing that I noticed about Thronum Vrondor was how they layer their instruments, it seemed to me that there was always something finer if you listen closely enough, cool little alternate-picked melodies which are tuned perfectly and what really stood out regarding them, is how well the vocals sound. Seriously, I really appreciated the 2 vocal tracks playing in unison, I feel this singer has done a superb job with matching these two vocals on top of one another which in other bands often has the right idea but the tracks sound too different to match perfectly, that is not the case with this vocalist. The deeper growls give such a nice depth to the whole atmosphere and really help propel the first vocal track.
For me, as a critic, I always look for fine details and in some cases whilst the music sounds good, you can’t find many, but with an album like this which has so much going on, you really can find some nice little techniques which add flair to the tracks, as a whole I think that Thronum Vrondor are a genuinely good band that really does have a lot of potential to achieve great heights.
Massive shout-out to the drummer for not only giving the album a really quite solid foundation, but for also being such a beast… Honestly, the blast-beats were crisp, the drum fills were very “full” sounding and the double bass was to die for, I feel this drum kit &/or the way it was tuned/recorded was done perfectly to say the least, loving the gallop rhythms of the kicks on the closing moments to the song “Skulptur Aus Fleisch”
Now I’ll briefly talk about my favourite track on the album. I must say that this was a hard one but in all honesty I personally loved the third track: “Gruwlijke Leegte”. I felt that the guitar taking a more slower/heavier sounding riff-driven approach was fantastic. This one really had my head banging from the start, I also love how in the main riff you hear, you can hear some awesome melodies played on the higher strings intertwined in the background, all the while the cymbal work really shines on this track, and I particularly enjoyed the continuous hits on the bell part of the ride,
This is one I’ll be saving for journeys.
All in all I’d give this album 8.5/10, narrowly missing 9, only due to personal preference, at the end of the day my score could mean jack shit to someone else who has a slightly different taste in black metal, 8.5 isn’t what I’d say the band’s ability is, if that were the question the score would be higher. Thanks for reading my review readers, always a pleasure to listen to new music and share my thoughts online.
Bran.
